Gornergrat
The Gornergrat (English: Gorner Ridge; 3,135 m (10,285 ft)) is a rocky ridge of the Pennine Alps, overlooking the Gorner Glacier south-east of Zermatt in Switzerland. It is well-known for Marathon. The Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon is one of the finest running events in the Alps.
The marathon welcomes not only runners, but also spectators who can enjoy this event within an unforgettable setting.
How to reach
It is located about three kilometers east of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. It can be reached from Zermatt by the Gornergrat rack railway (GGB), the highest open-air railway in Europe.
Registration from now on possible!
The registration for the 3 July 2021 is possible until reaching the limited number of participants in each competition:
Half marathon: 900 participants – Registration closed
Marathon: 800 participants
Relay-race: 200 teams
Ultra Marathon: 800 participants
4th GZM Training Camp in Zermatt (takes place)
from 3 – 6 June, 2021
We had to cancel the training camp 2020 because of Covid-19. We are looking optimistically towards the future and are very much looking forward to the camp at the beginning of June 2021 at the beautiful Matterhorn-Dorf 😉
Will the 19th Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon take place on 3 July 2021?
We are in the middle of the preparations for the 19th Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon, but unfortunately, we do not know whether the running adventure on the most beautiful mountain in the world will take place as planned on 3 July 2021.
However, to give you some planning security, we will now inform you as follows:
- If running events are permitted again from the beginning of July, the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon will take place on the weekend of 3rd/4th July 2021. Relay, Marathon and Ultra marathon start as usual on Saturday at 8.30 from St. Niklaus and on Sunday, 4th July,10.15 is the starting time for the half marathon in Zermatt.
- If no running events can take place in July, we will postpone the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon to the weekend of 28th/29th August 2021.
- For runners who cannot be present on the August weekend or on Sunday, 4th July 2021, we will transfer the starting place to 2022. The 20th Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon will take place on 2nd July 2022 – the anniversary edition awaits with various surprises.
- If you cannot start in 2022, we will extend the validity of your entry for another 365 days, and you will have the opportunity to stand at the starting line of the running adventure on the most beautiful mountain in the world on 1st July 2023.
On 19th May 2021 we will decide on the date of the event.
Should there be any changes in the meantime, we will inform you via website and/or email.
