An ideal starting point for excursions
The town of Brig with its ancient old quarter and Stockalper Palace stands at the foot of the Simplon Pass in the bright Upper Valais. Located at a significant junction, Brig is an excellent location for excursions. On the Lötschberg also Simplon, and in the Aletsch, it is close to hiking and ski areas. It also has its own thermal baths which make it an attractive resort for holidays.
The charming old town with its elegant homes, comfortable inns and hotels can inspire you to live a while. Lively Bahnhofstrasse is great for shopping and one of the most important Baroque palaces in Switzerland is the Stockalper Palace in Brig.
The history of brig is directly related to the Simplon Pass, one of the most spectacular alpine passes that begins just beyond the city gates. In the 19th century, Napoleon constructed a road to move his troops across the Simplon Pass, thereby becoming the first man-made route in the Alps.
Brig is a perfect starting point for an excursion to Zermatt or Saas-Fee, for example. It also lies along the route of the famous Glacier Express, which links Zermatt and St. Moritz. Going south, Brig is the most northerly border station for the Simplon railway tunnel to Italy. To the east, you pass through Goms, and the Furka Pass leads to central Switzerland; the Grimsel Pass into the Bernese Oberland; and the Nufenen Pass into the Ticino.
Winter
There are ski areas near Brig on Rosswald ‘s sunny terrace, and on Simplon road in Rothwald. The Aletsch ski areas are also close as is Goms, a veritable cross-country skier heaven.
Summer
On the Simplon and Lötschberg, and in the Aletsch area, there are over 150 km of designated hiking trails. There is also an array of road and mountain bike paths. Experts can take a demonstration of the observation plateau at Rosswald. The Brigerbad Baths, one of Switzerland ‘s biggest open-air thermal spas, is truly entertaining.

- The Stockalper Palace
Kaspar Stockalper was a visionary in early capitalism. He just sold and purchased all in those days claimed to be lucrative.
His majestic Brig palace testifies to his wealth and wordly influence. The building is the largest private building in Switzerland from the 17th century. Visit this representative castle and learn about the symbolism and the history of that place.
- Excursion tips
Brig can be reached by train from Bern in one hour, and from Zurich and Basel in two hours, after the completion of the Lötschberg base tunnels NEAT. This fact makes Brig a great place to go on day trips
The city of Brig, on the other hand, is a perfect starting point for many great excursions: the world-famous Big Aletsch Glacier (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is just a stone’s throw from our location. You can enter Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Chamonix, Stresa or Interlaken in under two hours. Brig is also an important station of the world-famous Glacier Express which connects Zermatt and St. Moritz. There’s also a number of interesting activities for children in the city.

- Ski and snowboard
Our region’s two ski resorts, Rosswald and Rothwald Wasenalp, may not be big in scale-however you can notice this is their best asset. Believing deeply in the idea that “tiny is lovely” we know how to help you feel the winter spirit more than everyone else. Apart from the trendy ski resorts crowded with visitors, Rosswald and Rothwald are two remote, picturesque and peaceful towns with 25 kilometers of well-maintained slopes and four and three ski lifts (Rothwald) respectively. The view over the glaciered Valais and Bernese Alps of the Rhone Valley is simply amazing, stretching across the Central Valais region.
- Hiking
We are a fantastic starting point for hiking tours throughout the south Swiss Alps. Experience the wonder of the world-famous Matterhorn or the magnificent Aletsch Glacier. And you will find that there’s so much more to explore pretty quickly. The mountains strike.
