Cheese Gruyère
Gruyère is a hard yellow Swiss cheese that originated in the cantons of Fribourg, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, and Berne in Switzerland. La Maison du Gruyère is a village cheese dairy providing the opportunity of viewing the hand-made production of the cheese “Le Gruyère AOP” and much more. Gruyère cheese is generally known as one of the finest cheeses for baking, having a distinctive but not overpowering taste.
Gruyère is classified as a Swiss-type or Alpine cheese, and is sweet but slightly salty, with a flavor that varies widely with age. Twice a day 36 farmers deliver their milk to the fromagerie (cheese dairy), milk from cows that graze the lush grass and fragrant flora of alpine meadows situated between 800 and 1600 m above sea level.
After two good hours walk, you will reach the other Cheese making chalet and you’ll receive a diploma certifying that you have accomplished the cheese factory hike! From Friday, August 28th, the wearing of the mask is obligatory on our entire site for all visitors from 12 years old up. It is required for the visit, obligatory for the Market and recommended for the restaurant.

La Maison du Gruyère Restaurant
The restaurant can seat 250 people and offers you a choice of typical regional dishes as well as a set menu of the day and some set menus for groups. The wearing of the mask is obligatory in the restaurant. Each table should only accommodate up to four people or parents and their children.
To facilitate the tracing of contacts in restaurants, the contact details of one person per group of customers must be recorded, either in writing or by the OK RESTO application. Number of people for the Restaurant: seats only –100 inside seats – 80 on the terrace.
Interactive Exhibition
La Maison du Gruyère guides you through a modern world of the senses and our cow Cerise (Cherry) introduces you to the secrets of the Gruyère AOP making.
- Hearing – the staircase that leads to the exhibition reverberates with the sounds of Gruyère AOP: bells, bellowing, the streams that rush down the mountain-side, a journey inside a drop of milk…
- Smell – is represented by typical aromas, such as the flora of the high pastures and the hay. These are deeply suggestive odours that penetrate deep into the subconscious.
- Touch – also has its small role to play during the visit : herbs, cow-hide, lime, cheese probe and brush, milk canisters…
- Sight – that is everywhere: production of the Gruyère AOP, videos, pictures, accessories, interactive games…
- Taste – your taste buds are lured by tasting Gruyère AOP cheese at three different stages of maturity: 6, 8 and 10 months.
A headset is given to you and the audio information is available in thirteen languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese as well as Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese and Russian. Written translations also available in Albanian, Korean, Dutch, Finnish, Hebrew, Persian, Romanian and Turkish.
- Time of the visit: about 30-45 minutes.
- Small dogs are allowed in the exhibition only if they are carried.
