Kappelbrucke – The Chapel Bridge
Kappelbrucke is a wooden pedestrian bridge that spans Reuss River in the city Lucerene in Switzerland. The bridge is considered as the oldest bridge in Europe. The Chapel Bridge was a part of the city fortifications originally and was built in 1332. Purpose of this 170 meters Kappelbrucke bridge is to connect old part of the town on the right bank with the new part on the left and to serve as protection from attack that could come from the lake at south.
Kappelbrucke has painting hanging underneath its walls. They are triangular in shape and describes events from history. A local Catholic painter Hans Heinrich Wägmann painted them in the 17th century. On 18 August 1993, a cigarette fire broke out and two thirds of paintings were lost.
Lucerne’s water tower is an attractive construction with octagonal shape tower stands on water. This tower was used as a prison and archive. Bridge was restored to original position after the fire and cost of reconstruction was US$2.1 million. Now, it is main tourist attraction of Switzerland.
