Water Church Zurich
The Wasserkirche of Zürich, first mentioned as ecclesia Aquatica Turicensi around 1250 and as wazzirkilcha in 1256. Wasserkirche is a church built on a small island in the Limmat, situated between the two main churches of medieval Zürich, the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster, at the Limmatquai and the Münsterbrücke. That is the small island on which – according to legend – the city saints Felix and Regula were executed by the Romans.
Since 1942, after a renovation, it has been used for worship and cultural purposes. The choir windows by Augusto Giacometti, which were created in the same year and juxtapose the life of Christ with the life of a modern man, are particularly beautiful.
The archaeological window “Wasserkirche Krypta” is open to the public under increased protective measures. Please note:
- The visitors ensure that a minimum distance of 1.5 meters is maintained at all times when visiting and that everyone present wears a protective mask, unless the group has its own protection concept (e.g. school classes).
- The crypt of the Wasserkirche can be entered by a maximum of 5 people at the same time.
- Hands should be disinfected before and after the visit. Disinfectants are available on site.
