Well worth the pilgrimage
Sankt Gallen is one of the most cultural towns of Northern Switzerland. It’s most famous landmark is Baroque cathedral with the Abbey Library. The library in St. Gallen has probably the most beautiful Rococo hall in Switzerland. In 1983, the whole area of the Abbey was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Irish missionary monk, Gallus founded a hermitage here around 612. He founded and named the town. The Sankt Gallen town became a significant cultural and educational focal point in Europe in the middle Ages. St. Gallen is an economic science focusing university town. Also this town attracts visitors to swim in summer. It has the magnificent views of romantic art-nouveau Dreilinden-Weiher open-air pool.
You can easily reach by bicycle. There is inline paradise of Lake Constance along the Cycle Path by rail or bicycle. The ‘Bridge Trail’ crosses 18 bridges in the Sittertobel near St. Gallen. It is a great experience for the walkers.
Places you should not miss in St. Gallen
- The Abbey of St Gall – An impressive architectural ensemble including numerous buildings contains the ancient abbey church in the north-eastern part of Switzerland, in the town of St Gallen.
- Appenzell Ausserrhoden – A beautiful German speaking region. It is famous for culture and traditional foods.
- Lake Walen (Walensee) – connects the two cantons of St. Gallen and Glarus and forms the western end of the holiday region known as “Heidiland”. The Flumserberg ‘s popular winter sports and hiking region lies on the other side of the lake.
